Folkestone and Hythe Labour Party statement on further opening of schools after June 1st

Folkestone and Hythe Labour Party would like to express its solidarity with all the parents, carers, teachers and school staff across the constituency who are rightly concerned about sending their children back to school after 1st June.

Although many schools in the UK have remained open throughout this crisis for key-workers and vulnerable children, this has been on a locally managed basis – and we applaud all those teachers, staff and parents who have made this work through this incredibly difficult time.

We recognise that schools and colleges must open further – but only when it is safe to do so. The safety and health of children, teachers, carers and parents is paramount.

We call upon the Government to publish the scientific and public health advice behind the June further opening; we also call for a system of testing, tracking and tracing to be implemented as a matter of urgency; and for the Government to work constructively with teaching unions, parents and the sector to create and agree upon stringent safety criteria for all schools before any further school opening takes place.

We also support and endorse the National Education Union’s Five Key Tests for the Government (available below), necessary before schools can open further.
